New Home Makeover Step 1: White Wash Fireplace

So when we were talking about moving in, my husband made me list what I absolutely NEEDED to have done in order to live there. I said hard wood floors installed…he didn’t think it was funny ๐Ÿ˜‰

One of my main *wishes* was to paint. We were lucky to have been able to fix up the place before we moved, so I wanted the majority of the interior painted while it was empty. Our old living room had an awesome navy wall that I loved, but I didn’t want to stick with the same exact colors so I searched for a dark teal.

Here was my Pinterest inspiration…

Grey, Dark Teal and Pops of Chartreuse โค

One problem to my vision…

This fireplace was really pissing me off. Frst of all, the stone is awesome, but the yellow and orange tones were throwing me for a loop. I talked about completely redoing the fireplace with my father in law and husband, but it just wasn’t an option at this point. I didn’t want to paint it because that always looks weird to me. I stumbled across a technique called whitewashing that tickled my fancy. You take white paint, water it down and it tones down the color. This is used a lot with brick walls and fireplaces, but I could not find a stone tutorial for the life of me! So…I decided to go for it anyways.

I had already stained the mantle, which was not the best timing. I definitely would have waiting until after the mess of whitewashing to do so, but whatever.

ImageLook how much better it is! This was the half way point. You can see the stark contrast now, but I think the stone keeps it’s natural integrity. It’s definitely not screaming PISS YELLOW at me any more!

ImageHere was the fireplace after I finished. For those wondering, I picked a flat interior off white color, it was Behr. I threw it in a bucket, dumped water into it (think 1 part paint, 3 parts water), no I did not measure, that’s not my style. I used a rough bristle exterior brush and tested one stone. I played with the water amount until I liked the tone I was getting. The water will drip and you will worry if you’re doing it right, but after a few minutes of freaking out it will work.

Let’s just take a break and look at that table. SICK. This is what moving looks like people. This is real like I’m showing you! Haha!

Without further ado…FINAL REVEAL

I could not be happier with the results. Honestly, I was planning on tearing up that black slate at the bottom, but the whitewashing makes it not so offensive to my eye any more.

Yay for step 1!

This same stone work is on our exterior. I’ve already began playing around with the idea of using the technique out there, but haven’t committed. Only time will tell!

A Very Thrify Christmas Swap: Reveal

I participated in a fun little bloggy adventure this Christmas. It was hosted by Lara’s Vintage and it was really fun!

Here were the rules:

1) Thrift a gift for a Blog partner (chosen by Lara)

2) Spend no more than $25 including shipping

3) Send it by the 17th

I was partnered with Megan from Simple Mum ๐Ÿ™‚ who, based in the short description I received from Lara, was looking for things for her kitchen. Well, I went thrifting and found this beast for $2…

Functional…but worn down to the bone. The chalkboard was just…done for…the corking destroyed, but in general it was sturdy and would be perfect in a kitchen, so I thought, why not make this thing my bitch and DIY it into perfection.

Step 1) Chalkboard paint

Step 2) Paint the edges

Step 3) Re-cork…I forgot to take a picture of that nightmare haha SO HARD to cut to the right size, but I did it….here’s the final product

I think it ended up pretty cute, I went back and forth on if I should paint all the wood white, but I liked it with just the edges. Megan can always add more white, distress it, whatever if she wants ๐Ÿ™‚ Since I was still under the $25 mark (I had to buy cork which is pretty cheap, already had the white paint and chalkboard paint), I found a pretty cute Chicken picture kitchen-y thing at a different thrift store and an old cookbook to throw in for good measure! Of course I forgot to take a picture of those things, but whatever….

In my description I described my Christmas decor…that’s about it. I went into this for fun, so I wasn’t expecting anything over the top, but Megan delivered in a BIG way

See? Look at that big old box! I was literally like a kid on Christmas just because of the big box haha

She found me THE CUTEST Christmas countdown Santa! Even added in some berries which totally goes with my decor.

At first, I didn’t see that all the numbers were in the box and was excited anyways…then I FOUND ALL THE NUMBERS tucked under a corner of the box and was even more blown away! Also, Megan threw in a few of her homemade spices in cute little chalkboard jars (great minds think alike haha)

They look amazing! Can’t wait to try themย  all ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you Megan for the awesome loot and thank you Lara for hosting this amazing little swap.

Deck the Halls

I’ve been decking the halls!

Here’s our teeny tiny tree!

This pathetic tree is on it’s last leg ๐Ÿ˜ฆ my husband bought it in Virginia when he was away at school for a year. He drove it down to Florida and almost left it in a parking lot, until I made him drag it to my house since I had no tree and no money to buy one. It’s been our tree for 3 years and its finally breaking down (it was only $10) It’s been a bit of a joke, but now that it’s falling apart I’m definitely going to miss it!

My little niece beast got her Christmas pictures taken! How cute is she?? The bow tie kills me! She’s almost five ๐Ÿ™‚
Here’s her newest creation…

I’ve also been working on things for the blogger swap I’m doing! Posts will be happening soon!

Halloween Nonsense

Every year I throw a party called the Feast of Screams. These are some of the ridiculous pictures from the night. My friends are pretty creative haha, it was smaller than usual, but ended up being VERY entertaining. I’ll explain more below… Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m supposed to be Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games. I know, I know, it came off very Nicky Minaj. Whatever!

“Chick magnet” – lol!

Can’t remember what the wrestler is from, oops!

“Shark week” ๐Ÿ™‚

Britney Spears and K-Fed

A tipsy Care Bear, Stripper and Cat Woman.

This was a game we played called “Tempt Your Fate”. Basically, it’s a bunch a fates/dares that you MUST participate in if you choose to draw a fate. There were a few prizes (Halloween t-shirts) thrown in there, but most consisted of ridiculous things to do + taking shots from the “consequence bowl”ย  which was an unholy mixture of vodka, cranberry juice and a bit of moonshine for good measure.

Fate was unkind – trick or treat to one house (this was 4 days prior to Halloween hahaha)

Tempting fate was a mistake – you must trade costumes with tribute (cue Effie Trinket)

Punishment – solo dance performance (and the resulting picture hahaha)

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Overall it was a good time! I have a pic of my husband and dog on my phone I’ll try to upload later. They were “Spaghetti and Meatballs” ๐Ÿ™‚ SOOOO cute!

Happy (belated) Halloween!

Trash to Treasure

My chair is done! Stain is still drying so it will be a little more cherry BUT you get the idea ๐Ÿ™‚

Gotta love finding treasures in your neighbors trash ๐Ÿ˜‰ Woot!

New project(s)!

Twerking on two new projects!

Both will be sprucing up our backyard area and both were…wait for it…FREE!!!!!!!!!

Scrounged this “junk” from neighbors garbage piles! Woot!

Awesome chair and heavy! Started painting/sanding. Think I’ll stain the wood a dark cherry.

FREE phone table that will serve as a side table for my new FREE chair. Stole this beauty from my moms garage sale pile!

Oh wait…there’s more…

I stuffed this table, chairs and glass (not pictured) into the back of my car BY MYSELF. Seriously hilarious memory. Prob looked like a psycho, but HEY! It. Was. Free.

All of the chairs are getting fresh paint, new bottoms (courtesy of father in law) and new cushions!

Will upload pics of the finished products ๐Ÿ˜‰
